Introduction to the NEW YORK Regional Table

The New York region continues to shed light on the complexities of the Catholic Church and the relationship between the institution and the lay Catholic community. This section of the NCR cafe is devoted to issues particular to the New York diocese and other diocese within the Northeast region. If a topic takes on national proportion, a new section will be opened to accomodate a wider conversation.

Fare ye well

As I mentioned on another thread, my time here has drawn to a close.

I ask all of you to pray for me as I begin postulancy in a Cistercian monastery tomorrow, the Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe.

I will keep you all in my prayers.

God Bless

Chris

Gospel values in an increasingly challenged church.

It appears that the recent podcast of an interview with a priest dicussing Carl Jung and cosmic spirituality met with some criticism on the part of listeners. The author misquoted Jung, who said, when asked if he believed if God exists, "I don't believe, I know."
Furthermore, the interviewee is a little far out, even should he have some interesting ideas. This does not make him a threat to any but the insecure. Can one refer to scripture and the gospel in the context of human experience and the human condition, without being labeled a fundamentalist? Can one say, "I have a personal relationship with Jesus (or God, or however you may wish to put it) and still stay in the conversation?

Three auxiliary bishops for Brooklyn

On August 22, 2006, three new auxiliary bishops were ordained in Brooklyn: Frank Caggiano (born in Brooklyn of Italian heritage), Guy Sansaricq (born in Haiti), and Octavio Cisneros (born in Cuba). Some might find this link of interest:

Dewey decimal system and forums

I admire what NCR Cafe is attempting, namely to create distinct zones or table topics of discussion for the US church. I now understand why five or so years ago, Commonweal went to the less expensive Yahoo Group format, with unlimited topics at one table. Should parish life in New York go under the "New York" topic or under "Parish Life"? It is similar to the choice of which Dewey decimal number to select for Hillel Levine's book, "The Death of an American Jewish Community," the history of the devastation of Blue Hills Avenue. Most libraries file it geographically under 974 (northeastern United States), but it could be shelved with books on urban renewal or Jewish life.
