About one year ago Fr. Andrew Greeley published an article questioning why we don't hold war crimes trials in the USA. I would like to apply the rationale that the Surveillance Policy supporters used to justify their activities. " If you haven't done anything wrong , what do you have to worry about ? " . Greeley posts another criticism of Phony Patriotism on his site. The Statue of Liberty was highlighted with great enthusiasm but with no mention of the great sonnet she holds on a tablet rejecting ' Storied Pomp ' and welcoming the wretched huddled masses. Paul Revere's Minutemen are parodied by the armed thugs who try to slam closed ' The Golden Door ' to which Lady Liberty calls us to hold high the Lamp of Freedom. We are pledged to be a refuge for the victims of ' Wars of Choice ' , and Torture , not the perpetrators thereof ! Geeely's article can be read at agreeley.com , which also hosts his Blog , AndysWord.com . He also mentions our historical ignorance of the other unjust wars and violations of human rights and dignity throughout US history that got glossed over by pompous voices trying to sound like Jefferson and Washington.

Fortuitously, Fr. Andrew Greeley has posted a new article today at suntimes.com , entitled , ' America's leaders violated one of the ten commandments ' . He cites material from a new book by June Mayer titled , ' The Dark Side '. The President, Vice President, CIA Director and their closest Aids are war criminals. They have violated International Law, American Law and Natural Law.
The President claims power to dispense with laws in times of grave danger. ' Enhanced Interrogation ' , saved American lives they say, but refuse to cite cases that brutal presidentially approved torture saved anyone's lives. Many ' Solid Patriotic Americans ' enjoy Nazi-like treatment of prisoners just to show how tough we can be when we have to be tough. It really shows how stupid we are. Torture doesn't work. The ' Tough ' interrogators will believe any wild story extracted from prisoners who know they can fool the ' Dumb ' cowboys to avoid further pain.
T.S. Elliot , ' When good does evilin its struggle against evil, it becomes indistinguishable from its enemy ' .
Greeley paraphrases Kit Carson's infamous motto, ' The only good Arab is a dead Arab ' . to highlight this attitude of perverted morality.
' The Dark Side ' tells us that CIA video discs of torture sessions , accessible by strict presidential authority alone, have been destroyed , ' For National Security Reasons ' . These words mean the government is once again preparing to violate one of the Ten Commandments.
