The problem with "hate-crimes" law... well, one of them
One major problem with hate crimes laws is the inevitable erosion of free speech rights. In Canada several operators of blogs and forums are being sued by Richard Warman for libel, because they reposted, linked to, alluded to, or commented on information that he was guilty of entrapment in cases he was bringing before the Human Rights Commission.
The suit brought against Kathy Shaidle, Ezra Levant, Kate McMillan and FreeDominion.ca has already shut down another site, an aggregator that had links to some of the named posts. Facing a $30,000 fight to save a $50,000 fine if they are named, Saskblogs Aggregator folded.
Certainly it is. The acts
Certainly it is. The acts of sexual love between two people of the same sex are as unitive (but not procreative) as any heterosexual acts. And if you mean simply that the parts don't fit together, in some cases they are a better fit.
You might find it instructive to get some books on gay sex out of the library and learn:a) what it is and b)how the people involved feel about it.
But of what merit,
But of what merit, AnnieO?

Little Bear I agree
Little Bear
I agree absolutely with you, on this area. This erosion of free speech is also a problem in America as well. In states where marriage can be betweeen a man and a woman and also between people of the same sex (civil unions), freedom of speech is lost.
In New Jersey, a father was placed in jail because he refused to allow his son to attend one session of life orentation/sexuality classes. The school was going to present to the students a class dealing with "marriage" between persons of the same sex. The thrust of the class was that this was fine (and it is the law in New Jersey). Because the father of this student, a 12-year-old boy, did not want his son in this particular session(and voiced his objection to school authorities)
---the father was jailed (and fined)---as a person who was perpetrating 'hate crimes', inculcating a minor {his son} with these ideas, and a breaker of the state law of New Jersey.
Religious leaders, too, can be censored if they preach or teach that God ordained marriage to be between a man and a woman and not between Adam and Steve or between Eve and Aileen. Churches can loose their tax exemption status---loose any property that they may have---loose their ability to speak the truth.
What you are saying, "Here Today" is that a silent cancer, under the guise of 'hate-crimes' are creeping up on us and can stricken us all unless we are vigilent.
I was not aware of an
I was not aware of an instance that close to home for me, and in researching it I found another, more troubling case: a Methodist camp lost its tax exempt status because it refused to host a Lesbian 'wedding'. This sets a national precedent for the government to disapprove of statements made by any non-profit (including religious groups).

This certainly does. I do
This certainly does. I do not understand what is meant by the concept of a civil union. If we are to look at this concept in scientific terms, it is not possible for two people of the same sex to be united in an act of Sexual Love. If we are to look at this concept simply in regards to a Loving Union, than we must grant "special" rights to all people who claim to Love each other.
