UPDATE: Message from Cafe Managment

Update (July 26): We have completed work on this problem. Everything that can be recovered has been recovered.

A hiccup in our commenting system yesterday caused quite a large number of comments to disappear. We have been working to restore what was lost and also taking the time for some routine maintenance. We very much regret this inconvenience.

WARNING: As background systems switch and update, any comments you make during this maintenance period may be lost. Again, we very much regret this inconvenience.

AnnieO: What we are doing

AnnieO:

What we are doing right now is going through the various modules that make up the cafe -- modules are the bits of coding that perform particular functions -- and turning them off one at a time so we can isolate the problem we've had with slowness previously. Once we find the exact source of the problem, we can fix it and restore full functionality. It is a tedious, time consuming job finding the problem and then more hours solving it. "Sort content" will most probably return, but I can't say when. Bear with us.

The slowness of the site and

The slowness of the site and the lost comments are unrelated. We have been brow beating our service provider over the slowness issue, he said he is working on it. Something to do with how our SQL database is being processed.

I am as frustrated as any of you are.

Dennis thanks for all the brow beating. It's been a real joy to have this site working correctly this morning. I guess it's true that you don't know how much you love something until it's taken away. Gracias Amigo.

Kudos on updating the system. It currently takes so long, I thought my computer was broken, but other sites respond just fine. Stay cool.

Marie, I agree with response

Marie, I agree with response time being a problem. Navigating this web site is darned near impossible.

And to me it looks like postings are way down. Are they getting lost or are people just getting turned off by the waits--the wait to submit, the wait to navigate, etc.

On top of this, the fact that something you post on a Saturday may not show up until Monday--this is like trying to have a conversation via Western Union. Discussions lose momentum, there is no continuity.

It would be helpful if management just told us what was going on--is the system overwhelmed? Is it a personnel issue? A cost issue?

AnnieO:

You are too kind. I wish I had the knowledge to fix the problem. Alerted to the problem by you and a couple other Cafe readers, I could only inform our tech support of the issue. They restored things. I think a few other pieces and comments are missing, but I will be sorting through some back ups and try to fix a few more things over the next couple of days.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding. Let the conversations resume!
