WASHINGTON -- Israel turns 60 today (May 8). American's Jewish community looks at the Jewish homeland in a variety of ways, from celebration to caution, and through eyes both secular and religious.

Six prominent American Jews weigh in on Israel's milestone, and what the world's only Jewish state can expect in the 21st century. Answers have been edited for length and clarity.

It may seem strange to us, but if you notice, the gospel lesson doesn't say anything about the ascension of Jesus and in fact, when you look at the other gospels, Mark's gospel has no account of the ascension and John's gospel doesn't mention anything about an ascension of Jesus 40 days after Easter. In fact, in John's gospel, it's on Easter Sunday night that Jesus comes back to the disciples and during that visit, he breaths on them and fills them with the Holy Spirit, as we will celebrate next Sunday on the feast of Pentecost. Everything is combined into the one experience of those disciples.

The Catholic Worker: ‘You go to where there is need’
On the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Worker Movement (May 1), Tom Fox spoke with Catholic Worker veteran Louis Rodemann of Holy Family House in Kansas City, Mo. Rodemann tells Fox: “The Catholic Worker is such a nitty-gritty, down to earth expression of Christian Catholic life that -- I say this not out of arrogance, but out of pride -- I think this is what Jesus had in mind.”
