In our rural immigrant family, we had an entire gaggle of old women who were devotees of little St Francis of the animals. They loved him because he spoke to the birds and the creatures. “Like we do.” They liked Francis because he worked hard outdoors. “Like we do.” They liked him too because they considered him a village healer. “Like us.”

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has resigned his long-standing membership in Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, a move that came just months after Obama distanced himself from the retiring pastor of the church, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"I have no idea how it will impact my presidential campaign but I know it was the right thing to do for me and my family," Obama said in an announcement. "This was a pretty personal decision, and I was not trying to make political theatre out of it."

Vatican upholds excommunications; priest, parish board to appeal

WASHINGTON -- The Vatican's doctrinal congregation has backed St. Louis Archbishop Raymond L. Burke's excommunication of members of a parish board of directors and the priest they hired, but the excommunicated Catholics vowed June 2 to appeal that decision.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said the six-member St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish lay board of directors is schismatic and that its pastor, Fr. Marek B. Bozek, has performed invalid sacramental acts while in the parish.
