Thank you, God of peace, for announcing the coming of peace on earth and for coming among us to make peace. Thank you for siding with the homeless, the refugee, the marginalized, the immigrant, the outsider, the disenfranchised, the imprisoned, the enemy. Thank you for being good news for the poor and the oppressed.

Tom Fox: I’m speaking today with Edward Hays, a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City, and the co-founder and a moving spirit behind Forest Peace Publishing. He is the author of more than 30 books on contemporary spirituality, and many bear his own art. He has also served as director of Shantivanam, a Midwest center for contemplative prayer, and as a chaplain at the state penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas. Welcome once again, Ed.

After 10 years of being a priest, Fr. Ed Hays approached his archbishop to ask for a three-month sabbatical. His plan was to spend the time in a Trappist monastery. Much to Hay's surprise, Archbishop Ignatius Strecker wasn't keen on the idea. "Three months isn't long enough," Hays recalls the archbishop saying. "Wander around the world and pray with all kinds of people, that's the way to learn how to pray," Strecker said. That set Hays on to 40-year odyssey.
